Google Business Profile: 8 ways to rank higher on Google Maps

8 ways to rank higher on Google Maps
Key takeaways
  • Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence.
  • A complete profile and a steady flow of reviews are the biggest wins you control.
  • Expect real movement in 2–4 months, and it keeps working without paying per click.

When someone searches “furniture shop near me” or “best clinic in Kannur”, Google shows a map with a handful of businesses at the top. Those businesses get most of the calls, visits and direction requests. Your Google Business Profile decides whether you’re one of them.

How Google decides who ranks

Google says local results are based mainly on three things:

  • Relevance: how well your profile matches what the person searched for.
  • Distance: how far your business is from the searcher.
  • Prominence: how well known and trusted your business is, online and offline.

You can’t move your shop closer to everyone, but you can work hard on relevance and prominence. That’s what the steps below are about.

1. Claim and verify your profile

Search for your business name on Google. If you see an option to claim it, do that first. Verification can take a few days, and until it’s done most of your edits won’t show.

2. Choose the right primary category

Your primary category is one of the strongest signals you have. Be specific: “Furniture store” beats “Store”. Add a few secondary categories only if they truly describe what you do.

3. Fill in every single field

Opening hours (including holiday hours), phone number, website, service area, products or services, and a clear description of what you offer. Every empty field is a missed chance to match a search.

4. Use your real business name

Don’t add keywords like “Best Furniture Kannur” to your business name. It goes against Google’s guidelines and can get your profile suspended. Put the keywords in your description, services and posts instead.

5. Add real photos every month

Your shopfront (so people can find you), the inside, your team and your products. Real, recent photos build trust much better than stock images, and they show Google that the business is active.

6. Get reviews, steadily

Ask every happy customer. Send them your direct review link on WhatsApp right after the sale, while the experience is fresh. A steady flow of recent reviews matters more than a big batch once a year.

Reply to every review, good or bad. A calm, helpful reply to a bad review often builds more trust than ten five-star ones. And never buy reviews: Google removes fake reviews and can restrict your profile.

7. Post updates regularly

Share offers, new arrivals, events and updates as posts on your profile. It keeps your listing fresh for customers and shows that someone is looking after it.

8. Keep your details the same everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number should match exactly on your website, Facebook, Instagram, JustDial and any other directory. Mismatched details confuse Google and customers alike.

How long does it take?

Quick fixes like categories, hours and photos can make a difference within weeks. Reviews and overall prominence build over 2–4 months. The best part: unlike ads, these results keep working without paying for every click.
